Classics Know No Borders, the Tao Lineage Is Shared and Passed On To deepen the cultivation of English-speaking Tao talents and promote the international transmission of Chinese classics, the English Group of Fa-Yi Chong-De’s Foreign Language Team held an English Sutra and Classics Camp at the Guang-Hui Tao Affairs Center in Nantou from June 7 to 8, 2025. Tao members from across northern, central, and southern Taiwan, as well as from overseas, gathered for this event. Under the compassionate guidance of Ji-Gong Living Buddha, Bai-Shui Sheng-Di, and Never-Resting Bodhisattva, the two-day program integrated classical wisdom with practical Tao cultivation, building a bridge between English and Chinese, as well as between the ancient and the modern. Day 1: Classic Readings Open the Heart On Saturday morning, everyone assembled at the Grand Buddha Hall of Guanghui Tao Affairs Center. We are sincerely grateful to Senior Tao Transmitting Master Xie Kun-De, one of the Tao Transmitting Masters of the Committee-in-Charge, for compassionately leading the offering and opening ceremony. With reverence, participants paid homage to Heavenly Mater and all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, praying for their blessings to ensure the success of this Sutra and Classics Camp. Senior Tao Transmitting Master Xie also offered heartfelt encouragement, expressing hope that Chong-De members would delve deeper into the study of classics and learn to share and promote the teachings in English. This would allow those who approach Tao through English to better appreciate the value and essence of Tao. Uniting Tao Hearts Through Laughter: Icebreaker and Tower Challenge as the Opening Chapter After the solemn incense offering and the Senior Master’s compassionate encouragement, the camp officially began with a team-building icebreaker. The facilitator introduced a game using over a hundred handmade slender cardboard columns, which were stacked into a giant Jenga-style tower. Two teams took turns removing one block at a time and placing it on top, continuing until the tower eventually collapsed. Every participant worked together carefully to preserve the structure. In a suspenseful moment with no clear winner, Tao Transmitting Master Peng ended the game by courageously removing the final block, embodying the spirit of “Even if a thousand stand against me, I will go forth.” Laughter and vibrant energy instantly bonded the participants, setting a positive tone for the in-depth learning that followed over the next two days. Understanding Tao, Practicing Virtue, Living the Classics: The Path of a Cultivator’s Return to the Origin Following that, Lecturer Wilbur (Li Wei-Jun) guided participants through a study of the Tao Te Ching. By selecting key chapters and offering a clear, structured analysis, he led everyone step by step to understand that Tao is the origin of all things—unseen, yet ever-present. It teaches us to follow the natural flow, return to our true nature, and live a life of wisdom in harmony with all beings, free from conflict and harm. Participants not only grasped the profound meaning of Tao but also came to appreciate the virtue of emulating Heaven and Earth—selfless, beneficial, and non-harmful. The session concluded with a systematic explanation of the three characters in the title Tao Te Ching: Tao is the essence, Te is the application, and Ching is the method. The cultivator’s complete path is to begin by realizing Tao, express it through Te (virtue), and embody it through Ching (practice). This is the journey of returning to the origin, understanding Tao, and living it with virtue. Sudden Awakening to the True Nature: Realizing the Equality of Buddha-Nature through the Chapter "Practice and Conduct" In the afternoon session, Lecturer James Ke (Ke Zheng-Jie) conducted a bilingual (Chinese-English) reading of The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch – Chapter One: Practice and Conduct, guiding participants through the spiritual journey of the Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng, who rose from a humble woodcutter to become a founding master of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Born into a poor family in Lingnan, Hui-Neng attained sudden enlightenment upon overhearing a verse from the Diamond Sutra: “Let the mind arise without dwelling upon anything.” He traveled to Huangmei to seek teachings from the Fifth Patriarch, Hong-Ren, and demonstrated his wisdom with the phrase, “Buddha-nature knows no north or south.” He was then secretly entrusted with the robe, bowl, and the teachings of sudden enlightenment. Lecturer James explained Hui-Neng’s key principles: “Directly point to the human mind, see one’s nature and become a Buddha,” and the practice of “Everyone can attain Buddhahood,” encouraging participants to reflect inwardly, realize their true nature, and enter the realm of truth. The Way of Benevolence Is Like a Diamond: Exploring the Analects, Returning to Inner Cultivation In the next presentation, Lecturers Jack Zhang (Zhang Yu-Ren) and Lily Hsieh (Xie He) co-led a session on The Analects, taking turns to explain Confucius' core philosophy of Ren (benevolence) in its many layers—from the innate goodness of human nature to the practical acts of loving others, and the personal cultivation through self-restraint and propriety. They introduced key figures such as Confucius, Mencius, and disciples like Yan-Hui, Fan-Chi, and Zhong-Gong, using relevant passages to illustrate their conduct and virtues. The cultivation of a gentleman was compared to the crafting of a diamond, while the famous “Six-Foot Alley” story illustrated the spirit of yielding for harmony. Additionally, the image of African children making shoes from discarded materials was used to deepen understanding of the principle “Do not impose on others what you do not desire yourself,” thus enriching the participants’ grasp of the Tao of Ren through self-reflection and empathy. The Great Learning: From Essence to Application Next, Lecturer Joyce Huang (Huang Xi-Qing) provided a clear and well-organized explanation of the interpretation of "The Great Learning" found in the fifteenth patriarch Wang Jue-Yi's work, Li Shu He Jie (A Comprehensive Explanation of Principle and Numerology). Patriarch Wang, drawing upon the concept of "Yuan, Hui, Yun, and Shi" (epochs, cycles, movements, and generations) to trace the origins and ultimate ends, expounded on the sequence of beginning and end, and prior and latter, in the learning path of a noble person. He provided an in-depth explanation of the three core objectives: “Manifesting one’s innate virtue, renewing people, and attaining supreme good.” He emphasized the cultivation practice of "unity of knowing and acting, understanding the essence and achieving practical application" – moving from principle (the truth of the Wu-Ji) to practical application. This involves thoroughly investigating principles, fully realizing one's nature, and ultimately arriving at destiny, embodying the integrated thought of the Three Extremes, Wu-Ji, Tai-Ji and Huang-Ji. The Way of Great Learning for White Yang Era Tao cultivators begins with the enlightened guidance of the Tao Transmitting Master, who points out the essence of bright virtue, and continues through Confucian practices of self-cultivation and engaging with the world, toward the ideal of inward sagehood and outward kingship—the ultimate state of practical realization. Delving into the Sutras and Quietly Observing the True Nature — Shared Cultivation and Awakening Through Discussions and Holy Teachings Each session of this sutra and classics camp concluded with approximately 50 minutes of group discussion. Through well-crafted guiding questions designed by the lecturers, participants were able to deeply explore the meanings within the classics and integrate them with their own experiences in Tao cultivation. Each group, guided by experienced lecturers and even Tao Transmitting Masters from different temples, fostered an environment where everyone could freely share insights and encourage one another. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and touching moments, reflecting the sincerity and vitality of Chong-De Tao members. Additionally, two “quiet reading” segments were woven into the first day’s program. Under the guidance of lead instructors, participants chanted aloud the “Spiritual Guidelines” from the compassionate teachings of Never-Resting Bodhisattva, as well as the “Preface to the Analects Sacred Teachings– Part II,” both of which were translated by the English Group of the Foreign Language Team. With every heartfelt word and resonant voice, the wisdom of the holy teachings deeply touched each person’s soul, awakening inner vows and resonance. The unified, respectful chanting brought focus, calm breath, and mental clarity, allowing for deeper understanding and quietly strengthening participants’ faith and resolve on the path of cultivation. Heavenly Melody Tunes the World — An Evening Where Classics and Music Intertwined The evening program opened with moving songs prepared by the activities team, touching the hearts of all present through beautiful melodies that stirred a shared resonance with the Tao. This was followed by a fun team-based competition, where participants collaborated to identify the titles of English Tao songs or well-known English tunes just from their musical introductions. Once identified, teams sent representatives on stage to perform. Each group was also tasked with extracting the meaning from the lyrics and connecting them with classical quotes from The Analects, Mencius, The Doctrine of the Mean, Tao Te Ching, or even the Bible, followed by interpretation and sharing. With the compassionate reminders of the Tao Transmitting Masters and the thoughtful planning of the activities team, the evening beautifully demonstrated the close connection between classical teachings and daily life. The wisdom of the sages subtly permeated hearts and actions through melody and reflection. The event was both educational and entertaining, leaving a lasting impression. Before the evening ended, Tao Transmitting Master Lin Jun-Ren offered words of encouragement, affirming that the evening events at each year’s Sutra and Classics Camp as well as the English Camp—so meticulously prepared by the activities team—are always worth anticipating. He praised their creativity, especially in combining classical wisdom with engaging activities that embody the Tao. Master Lin also gave a preview of the next day’s keynote lecture, which would introduce the origins and core concepts of the treasured classic The Illustrated Tao Lineage, laying a solid foundation for everyone’s path in Tao cultivation. Day Two: Vows Through the Holy Teachings, Embracing the Tao Lineage The second day began with a sincere early morning incense offering ceremony. Afterwards, Lecturer Liu Jia-Ji led all participants in an invigorating morning energy exercise—Pai-Da Gong—held in the spacious square of the Guang-Hui Tao Affairs Center. Surrounded by the righteous energy of Heaven and Earth, this practice awakened both body and mind. Lecturer Liu also shared that this exercise not only helps regulate one’s physical and mental well-being but can also serve as a meaningful outreach to connect with communities and foster good affinities with neighbors. Three Tao Transmitting Masters Pass the Torch: Integrating Practice, Principle, and Heart After enjoying a delicious and nutritious breakfast, the first class was led by Tao Transmitting Master Shi Kun-Yu with the topic: Translation Practice of Holy Teachings by Immortals and Buddhas. Master Shi compassionately guided each group to send a representative on stage to perform real-time English interpretation of selected Holy Teachings. Six Tao members took turns translating precious, line-by-line teachings from the Immortals into English and then elaborating on their meanings. Meanwhile, the audience listened with deep focus, silently practicing how to render the translations accurately and naturally. Tao Transmitting Master Shi encouraged everyone, emphasizing that this is a vital cultivation skill for lecturers in the Foreign Language Team and a necessary foundation for becoming bridges that convey Tao across all nations in the future. After the interpretation session, Master Shi invited Hannah, the third-grade daughter of one of the Lecturers, to come on stage and recite from memory the first ten verses of the One-Hundred-Filial Sutra in English—a text she had studied in the scripture reading class. Her calm and steady recitation affirmed the benefits of scripture reading for children and strengthened everyone’s confidence in promoting English scripture reading for younger learners. Next, Tao Transmitting Master Lin Jun-Ren presented the topic “Illustrated Tao Lineage.” With Tao Te Ching and I Ching as the foundational frameworks, he explained the cosmological and spiritual transmission system through the principle: “Tao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, and Three gives birth to all things.” Master Lin also elaborated on topics such as Fu Xi’s Eight Trigrams, Taiji theory, the Hetu and Luoshu diagrams, and the Five Elements and Yin-Yang, constructing a systematic macro view of how Tao gives rise to the universe and is transmitted through generations to humanity. Holy Teacher, Ji-Gong Living Buddha once praised the Illustrated Tao Lineage as: “Each chapter a jewel, each sentence radiant; each diagram like precious wood, each word fragrant with meaning.” Clearly, this classic contains profound truths of creation and nurtures the path of returning to the origin through spiritual cultivation. Following this, Tao Transmitting Master Peng Xian-Yang presented on the topic “The Master Remains Silent,” gently reminding everyone that true cultivation does not rely on language or external forms, but on inner awareness and personal realization. The Master has long encouraged lecturers and members of the English Division in the Foreign Language Department not to limit classic learning to knowledge accumulation but to deeply understand and apply it in daily life. This allows Tao teachings to become more relatable and meaningful, especially for foreign Tao members seeking genuine insight. Using the durian fruit as a metaphor, Master Peng explained: "People may say durian is delicious, but if we’ve never tasted it ourselves, no matter how much we repeat what others say, we can never convey its true flavor." True wisdom does not come from reasoning alone but from personal experience. Only through direct practice can we realize the truth—not as “what others say,” but as “what I have tasted.” Master Peng further cited the Sixth Patriarch’s teaching of “No reliance on written words; directly point to the mind,” emphasizing that genuine cultivation is not dependent on language or text, but arises from inner awakening and realization. Cultivation, he noted, is about subtraction—letting go of greed, anger, and ignorance, and transcending attachments to knowledge and form. Only then can one abide in awareness, return to the true essence, and realize the authentic Tao. Summing Up and Looking Ahead: Reflections and the Future of Tao Propagation As the English Sutra and Classics Camp drew to a close, six lecturer representatives from Thailand, Taiwan, and Singapore were invited to the stage to share their reflections. Each speaker sincerely expressed deep gratitude for the boundless grace of Heaven and the virtues of our Holy Teachers—acknowledging the profound compassion and teachings of our Shi-Zun, Shi-Mu, Bai-Shui Sheng-Di, and Never-Resting Bodhisattva. They felt honored to have participated in this English Sutra and Classics Camp, where learning the classics in English deepened their understanding of the wisdom within the texts. The experience also allowed them to reflect on their original vows and aspirations in Tao cultivation, and they vowed to transform what they had learned into strength for future Tao propagation—broadening their path of cultivation and propagation. During the final encouragement segment, Tao Transmitting Master Tan Siew Hua from Singapore was specially invited to deliver a closing message. With a humble and gracious demeanor, Master Tan warmly greeted each of the Tao Transmitting Masters present and expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to return to Guang-Hui to learn and cultivate together with everyone. He noted that most lecturers and Tao members in Singapore primarily use English, and he hoped to bring this bilingual method of studying classics back to promote it locally. This would help lecturers gain a deeper understanding of the scriptures and break through the barriers of language and culture. Master Tan also praised the fruitful interaction and exchange among English-speaking Tao talents from both Taiwan and overseas. He encouraged continued opportunities for mutual learning and growth in the future. While urging Taiwanese Tao members to enhance their English-speaking capabilities for Tao propagation, he especially encouraged Singaporean lecturers to follow the compassionate teachings of Never-Resting Bodhisattva: to strengthen their foundation in the scriptures and classics, and to diligently improve their bilingual interpretation and Tao propagation abilities. This is crucial to ensure they successfully carry out their mission of spreading Tao to every corner of the world. Closing Remarks: One Light Kindles Thousands — The Tao Lineage Shines On Over the course of two days, the wisdom of the classics not only radiated through the English language but also took root deeply in every participant’s heart. "The benevolent love others, Taoists practice non-action, and Buddhists seek enlightenment"—although these come from Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism respectively, they are in essence one unified truth. This English Sutra and Classics Camp served as both a recharge and refueling station along the journey of Tao cultivation and propagation. Amid the ever-growing wave of international Tao affairs, every participant becomes a beacon of light, illuminating the way home for more sentient beings. Text and photos: Fa-Yi Chong-De Eight Talent Groups, Department of Foreign Languages, English Division
