2025 English Tao Exchange Held in San Francisco
Bridging East and West, Spreading the Tao Worldwide
圖片
On August 23–24, 2025, around fifty Tao Transmitting Masters, lecturers, temple hosts, from Singapore, Vancouver, Houston, Chicago and Taiwan gathered at the San Francisco Tao Center, Chong-Hui Grand Temple, for the first-ever English Tao Exchange in Northern America. Guided by the Grace of Heaven and the virtues of our Holy Teachers, White Water Holy Emperor, and Never-Resting Bodhisattva, the participants held discussions about pragmatic approaches to spreading the boundless Tao to native English-speakers.
An Opportunity in Tao Propagation through Cultural Fusion
The entire exchange was conducted in English. Tao Transmitting Master Ma from the Chong-De Committee-in-Charge and Tao Transmitting Master Zhou from the San Francisco Tao Center delivered opening remarks. Master Ma reminded everyone that spreading Tao in English is inevitable as Tao propagation extends beyond the Chinese-speaking communities. He emphasized that direct word-for-word translations may not suffice; interpretations must integrate the cultural background of the audience in order for them to understand the noble essence of Tao. Translators must therefore not only understand the language, but also embody the local culture, so that the true spirit of Tao may shine forth.
Creating a Primarily English-Speaking Space for Cultivation
Throughout the sessions, participants explored topics ranging from the universality of Tao to practical experiences in local English Tao classes. Lecturer Su and Lecturer Guo from San Francisco highlighted that Tao is not a belief system, but an awakening of the true self. Lecturer Qiu and Lecturer Hor emphasized that Tao resonates deeply with the core of Western thought and religion, responding to the innermost needs of modern people. Lecturer Huang noted that Tao members carry the sacred mission for we have been transmitted the true Tao. Lecturer Fang from Vancouver stressed that beyond language and culture, what unites all is the shared human spirit. Lecturer Yash and Lecturer Tony from Vancouver further shared the vision of establishing full-English Tao temples, providing native English-speaking Tao members with a spiritual home in which they can fully participate. Lecturer Hsueh and Lecturer Hu from San Francisco reminded that passing Tao to the younger generation requires treating the temple as a family—offering guidance, a sense of belonging, and also responsibility. Lecturer James from Taichung indicated that Tao affairs must be inherited, and the Tao baton must be passed on. Singapore shared a trilingual song they produced: "Our Dream", that showcased the vibrancy of the Chong-De Youth.
Reaching Consensus through Sharing of Experiences
Each topic was enriched with inspiring small group discussions, where participants from different centers harbored vulnerability when sharing truthful experiences and challenges. A key outcome of these discussions was the agreement that standardized I-Kuan Tao terminology, English holy songs, and a modified curriculum were needed.
Tao Transmitting Master Ma praised the pioneering spirit of this first all-English Tao Exchange. He was inspired by the lively presentations, the depth of content, and the Western-friendly discussion formats. Looking ahead, he encouraged participants to build consensus in the development of a systematic Tao studies framework that would enable the expansion of Tao propagation to the English-speaking communities.
Advancing Together Toward a Bright Future
As the first English Tao Exchange in Northern America ended, participants departed with hearts full of inspiration, strengthened by shared purpose and a deeper understanding of how Tao can flourish across cultures. Though the gathering lasted just two days, the seeds planted will continue to grow—through ongoing collaboration, dedicated practice, and the compassionate guidance of our Heavenly Mandated Enlightened Masters, White Water Holy Emperor, and Never-Resting Bodhisattva. With unity, wisdom, and sincerity, may we continue to bridge East and West and bring the light of Tao to all corners of the world.
